I have personally trained with Mr. Alland. He is especially generous and willing to share what he knows.
I am fortunate in many ways for having studied with him, and do recommend him to interested persons.
In the several years I have interacted with him on different levels, he had always given more than he asked for in return - which is in stark contrast to most.
He loves Filipino martial arts and shares with passion and personality.
I suggest to stand in front of him with a stick in hand and make up your own mind.
Let me know how you make out.

I too have trained with Mr. Alland in the past. I found him to be full of knowledge and eager to teach. To echo Mr. Sotis's
comments, I always got more than I paid for. I believe that Mr. Alland has made the Filipino Arts a major part of who he is. He has
a saying that goes "It does not matter who you trained with or what rank you hold. All that matters is can I stop you or can you stop
me". You have got to respect an attitude like that. I have lost touch with Mr. Alland in the past year or so and I can not even tell
you where he is living. If you do contact him please give him my best and tell him I told you to ask about the "Transference of
Progression", he will know what you mean.Stay Sharp,Aaron Little

I was with Greg Alland in the last half of the eighties and some of the early nineties. I had accompanied Master Alland on many of his seminars. I noticed that he inspired many with his pro active teaching style. He certainly shared much of what he had aquired freely and openly with all who had asked of him. I would see Greg sometimes utterly exhausted because of the energy that he had spent performing and leading his seminar groups in training. I also had trained with Master Alland and was part of the NYC classes. He had a good following of devoted students at the time. Together we had produced a cable tv show for Manhatten cable and for the Capital District of New York stations...that was 1988-1990. The show was called "American Kali Silat", it was popular and is remembered by many still.
There seems to be a lot of controversy surrounding Greg Alland. I had witnessed it first hand and I will share a part of what I had seen here.

Greg early on became a "pioneer" in the promotion and advancements he had made with the Philippine Martial arts known as Kali,Eskrima,Arnis...and also the Indonesian Martial Arts known as Pencak Silat. In the beginning of 1970's Greg was one of the original students of the Great Master and teacher Tuhon Leo Gaje jr.

I had seen many of the early video tapes and television shows that Greg had produced. These were taped at the end of the 1970's and the early 1980's. They featured Leo Gaje, Suriyadi Eddie Jafri, Dionisio and Cacoy Canete and other now world celebrated Masters. Back then when most others in the martial arts community were unaware of these arts Greg knew these Masters and was training with them firsthand.

Greg had travelled to the Philippines and Indonesia many times to meet many of the masters that were living there. I had seen for myself that Greg had sent them money and also had arranged seminars in the United States to help many to promote their arts here in America. The controversy stems from jealousy that other students (of these great masters) had for what Greg was accomplishing. Greg is a very good promoter and very early on had created opportunity where others couldn't.

Greg had put in the hard work, the countless hours of travel and on the phone making arrangements for his teachers to fly over and to have their accomodations here in America. To this day Greg is conducting seminars and bringing these Masters here and to other nations.

Because of his hard efforts, The Filipino Martial Arts community owes him gratitude and I respect Master Greg Alland for what he had accomplished for himself and others.
Back in the 1980's I had seen jealousy and rivalries over what Greg was doing and much of it is misunderstood by onlookers today. Back before everyone else thought of producing video tapes-Greg had already completed many in his own enterprising spirit. His first tapes were released around 1983, I believe. Others around him were becoming upset at the "success" that Greg was accomplishing. They didn't understand that Greg gave back much to his teachers and wasn't making that much for himself or his family off of his hard work. In fact, I remember Greg's lovely wife having to put in so much overtime at work, just to pay the bills. Greg Alland deserves some of the credit for today's popularity of the Filipno martial arts - through his efforts of creating opportunities for both masters and students of Eskrima.
I have seen Greg Alland stick sparring and would have to say that he was very impressive. In his past Greg had tangled with some very good full contact athletes. There is, caught on one tape, a match where Greg goes to the ground with a fierce fighter. The Young athletic American kickboxer was no pushover. They attack each other viciously and it is quite intense, especially considering the timeline...well before the current day - popularity of ground fighting tactics. (Greg's system had alway's incorporated in close fighting with some takedowns and grappling.) You can see Dan Inosanto looking on and shaking his head with respect and amazement at what had just taken place. The young full contact fighter had some severe injuries and a broken arm was quite evident. I've worked the sticks with Greg many times in the past. I also have my share of full contact experience, in the ring as a Boxer, Pro Kickboxer and Pro wrestler. I've also gone all out with stick sparring many times, with knowledgeable opponents, and know what I'm talking about. Looks can be deceiving...Greg Alland does have a lot of heart when push comes to shove. He has only trained in Eskrima and Silat and had used that quite effectively in sparring.

Dear Greg,

Greetings,

Thanks for your e-mail.I wish you also good health
and many more years of your dedications will be
rewarded in due time.

You have all the reason to communicate directly to me
because between you and me we had the beginning and
that beginning was not enjoyed by anybody. Whatever,
the result of many years of absence, the foundation of
our relaltionship was more than anything else.
Actually, many got jealous of you because they wanted
to get close to me as you were close to me. Billy had
this notion that he can be close to me to grab the
opportunity. but that is not the end of the philosphy
and the culture which is ours. Actually greg,we have
no differences, it is just because of some greed that
comes between us that made someone took the
opportunity. No matter what you do the elements of the
things you do comes back to me and that is the thing
you cannot forget neither i will disown that. As a
matter of fact the pekiti-tirsia Germany/ Europe is
the fruit of your labor and the blade fighters, Guild
of Tom Sotis. So, remember that when things are to be
reckoned with, what ever happens we can still continue
our relationship like the old, old days. We are
already matured and responsible enough to realize that
forgiveness is the price of happiness and of course
your skill to propogate the art as an FMA must be
recognized. This Novemebr is the biggest event in the
Philippines. Now the government recognize the
importance that the art will help the economy of the
country and because of this we spearhead the movement
by having the WORLd KALI GRANDCHAMPIONHIP, SPONSORED
BY THE PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT, DEPT. OF TOURISM , ARMED
FORCES OF THE PHILIPPINES AND THE PHILIPPINE SPORTS
COMMISSION. I want you to be present because the
President of the Philippines and the many dignitaries
will attend the event. Tom Sotis will be the Chairman
of the Knifefighting division. Awards will be given
and promotions will be given personally by the
President of the Philippines. Her Excellency Gloria M.
Arroyo and the SEc. of Tourism Richard Gordon. You
come because I will present to you your official
authority of the SINATIRSIAWALI and your special
award for the 30 years of hard achievement in the
promotion of the FMA. I have the power to elevate your
credibility so that the world will recognized you as
the true master of the art. You know Greg it is about
time that you can lead the changes in the UNited
States in so far as the true practices of the art.
because of your ability to encourage people and your
skill to win friends and influence people. Sooner we
will be in the world sports, and I want you to be with
me wherever and whenever we make the world go round. If
i can bring others to go with me into the highest
pedestal of achievements, why can't I bring you when
had made sacrifices with me in new York and many
places. I only want people who can stand before
anyone and fight. One thing you will not find Billy
under my blessings.

So, let me know your plans and your plan to bring
people and I will accomodate you. But i want you to
directly deal with me and nobody else.

My best reagards and God Bless.
